A Touring Bass Player Since 2002, Now Recording Under His Own Name

No Big Deal runs three minutes and thirty-nine seconds, and the credit reads one name. Daniel Grimsland released it on 21 August 2026. It is a blues-leaning rock track that borrows the bark of sixties garage and the swing of seventies radio rock. He spent most of his working life playing other people’s songs. This one is his.

Daniel Grimsland’s music sits in the playlist below, and this desk’s coverage of him collects on the Daniel Grimsland profile. No Big Deal reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Give it a listen before reading on.

Where No Big Deal Came From, and Who Carried It There

Grimsland grew up in the Hudson Valley region of New York. He now lives in Los Angeles. In between, he spent years in the Woodstock progressive rock band 3, and in 2012 he started a group of his own called The Grape And The Grain. The professional road began earlier still. In 2002, aged seventeen, he first went out on tour playing bass for a group called Ceili Rain. He then stayed out there.

That order matters for a song like this one. Players who come up on a bass guitar tend to write from the bottom of the arrangement upward. No Big Deal works that way too. The bass and drums set the shape. The guitars then fill the space they leave, and he stacks nothing on top that the rhythm section has not already earned.

How Daniel Grimsland Learned to Leave a First Take Alone

Bass is not his only instrument. His own listing calls him a multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer, songwriter and composer, and a proficient guitarist, drummer, percussionist and keyboard player. Much of that work happens at home, in a studio he assembled himself, where he also produces other artists. He recorded and produced The Little Miss album Best Self there. In addition, he writes for sync catalogues, and he wrote a song called You Can Run, But You Can’t Drive High for a Vox Media and Ad Council campaign.

He has also documented the method behind that work. It explains the plainness of this recording better than any adjective would. Describing his first solo EP, The Upsides Of Quarantine, in 2020, Grimsland told ShoutOut LA:

“Basically, I would pick an instrument to start with, record whatever came out on the first try, and then go from there, sticking with the ‘you get one take’ formula, on whatever instrument I played.”

Four improvised songs came out of that run. Six years on, he composes rather than improvises. Still, the tolerance for a first take has clearly survived. No Big Deal keeps the small imperfections that a longer session would have sanded away, and it is better for keeping them.

How No Big Deal Sits Against Sixty Years of Blues Rock

The track fuses blues, classic rock and garage rock. That is a wide claim, however, until you hear how narrow the execution is. There is one main riff. It does not modulate to prove a point. The vocal sits level with the guitars rather than above them, the way engineers mixed records when a band played a song in a room. Three minutes and thirty-nine seconds is exactly long enough for that idea.

Listeners who follow The Black Keys will recognise the economy. That band built its early catalogue on two players, a small amount of gear and a room they let stay audible. The same restraint governs here. Jack White is the other reference point, though less for the sound than for the working rule behind it. Pick the take that happened, then stop. For the swing rather than the grit, Creedence Clearwater Revival remain the model for a three-minute rock song that says one thing plainly and gets out.

Who It Is For, and Where to Hear Daniel Grimsland

None of this is a revival exercise. Grimsland has come through progressive rock, touring rhythm sections, production work and the sync catalogues. No Big Deal is what that history sounds like once he finally points it at his own name. The genres are old, of course. Yet the particular combination of a bass player’s arrangement instinct and a producer’s willingness to leave a first take alone is his.

MusicRoots.News curator team: “The detail that tells you most about this record is the credit. It goes to a producer who spends his working weeks fixing other people’s recordings. He knows exactly how to clean this up. He decided not to.”

No Big Deal is out now. You can hear the release on Spotify and buy it on Bandcamp. You can also follow Daniel Grimsland on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, Apple Music and SoundCloud, with more at his official site.
