Where Tyrant Came From on the Andrew Moore and Hooch Album Mountain

A Kentucky Piano Band, a Bluegrass Grammy Winner and a Golf Legend on One Track

Track eight on Mountain runs five minutes thirty-one, which makes it the longest thing on the record by more than a minute. It is called Tyrant, and the credit line is the reason. Andrew Moore and Hooch share it with Dan Tyminski and with John Daly, and those are three names that have no business appearing together on a country record. Following how they got there explains most of what this album is.

Andrew Moore and Hooch’s music is in the playlist below, and their full run of coverage sits on the Andrew Moore and Hooch profile. Mountain reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Press play, then read on.

How Andrew Moore and Hooch Built Mountain Around the Piano

Start with the band, because the instrument is the unusual part. Andrew Moore and Hooch are a five-piece out of Kentucky, and they describe their own sound as piano-driven Americana. That is a real distinction rather than a marketing line. Americana is overwhelmingly a guitar tradition. The piano turns up as colour, or as a barroom flourish. It is rarely the thing the arrangement is built on.

Putting the piano at the centre changes the harmony. A guitar band writes in shapes that fall under the hand. That is why so much of the genre sits in the same few keys and voicings. A piano writer has the whole keyboard and both hands. The chords move differently, and the bass can walk where the guitar would not follow. Across Mountain that shows up as more movement underneath the vocal than the style usually carries.

The record runs thirteen tracks and a little over forty-nine minutes, and it does not hedge on where it sits. Ford Tough Chevy Strong and Sex in a Silverado are country songs with no apology in them. Heart of a Father goes the other way. The band closes on Peace Love and Harmony, recorded live at the Record Shop. That is a deliberate way to end a studio album. The last thing you hear is the group playing in a room, not a mix.

None of this is a new band finding its feet. Andrew Moore and Hooch are voting members of the Recording Academy, and they took the Josie Music Awards Band of the Year in both 2024 and 2025. The writing on Mountain is the sound of a working group that plays constantly.

Why Tyrant Needed Dan Tyminski, and What John Daly Is Doing There

Now the credit line. Dan Tyminski is one of the most recorded voices in bluegrass. Outside the genre he is best known as the singing voice of the Soggy Bottom Boys on Man of Constant Sorrow. He has been in Alison Krauss and Union Station for three decades. He is not a guest you book for novelty. Putting him on a track buys a specific tone: high, hard and unsentimental, the sound of a tradition rather than a reference to one.

John Daly is the other kind of guest entirely. He is a professional golfer, a two-time major winner, and by any normal reading he is the celebrity cameo on the album. He also stars in the video for the track, which TMZ turned up to film him making.

The interesting thing is that the song is built to hold both. At five and a half minutes, Tyrant has room for a genuine bluegrass vocal and for a famous non-musician. The arrangement gives each of them somewhere to sit rather than crowding them into one bar. A shorter, tighter cut would have had to choose.

The MusicRoots.News curator team: “The Tyminski booking is the tell on Mountain. Plenty of independent records buy a celebrity name for the press release, and this one has that too. But a band that also goes and gets the voice from Man of Constant Sorrow is telling you which half of the credit it actually cares about.”

Where to Hear Mountain and the Rest of Andrew Moore and Hooch

If the reference points help: the brief points at Chris Stapleton and The Red Clay Strays, and both are fair. Stapleton for the weight of the vocal and the blues underneath the country. The Strays for the Southern rock edge that keeps this from being a polite Americana record. The piano is what separates Mountain from either.

It is worth hearing in order rather than on shuffle. The sequencing does real work. The live closer only lands if you have heard the twelve studio tracks before it.

Mountain is out now on Spotify, with Tyrant sitting at track eight, and the catalogue is also on Apple Music. The band posts on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X, the videos including the one for Tyrant are on their YouTube channel, everything current is collected on their Linktree, and there is more at the official site.
