Matt Warren Recorded It All Made Sense in Three Weeks at Home

Two Guitars, A Kick Drum, A Tambourine and A Voice Kept Low

Matt Warren released it all made sense on 20 September 2023. He recorded it at home over roughly three weeks, and he kept the parts down to two guitars, a kick drum, a tambourine and a vocal. The restraint is the whole point of the record.

Matt Warren’s music sits in the playlist below, and the full run of coverage sits on the Matt Warren profile. It All Made Sense came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Give it a listen, then read on.

Where Matt Warren Started Writing Again

Warren is a songwriter from Nantwich, in Cheshire. He had not written for a long stretch before 2020. The lockdowns changed that, because picking the guitar back up became the way through, and the writing that followed turned into a run of releases rather than a single return.

That provenance matters here. it all made sense is not a studio production dressed up as a small one. It is genuinely small, and he made it where he lives.

The method he used to find the words was deliberately loose. Warren has described inspiration arriving from very little, a phrase from a film or a line from a book, and he leans on stream-of-consciousness writing to turn a fragment into something worth developing. That is a writer’s habit rather than a producer’s. It shows in a lyric that reads as thought rather than as argument.

What Was Playing While The Album Took Shape

He has also been open about the reference point. Kurt Vile’s Watch My Moves was the record in his ear, and specifically the way Kurt Vile takes a simple motif and either builds it into something large or leaves it exactly where it is, letting the song sit still.

Warren took the second option. The motif arrives early and it is allowed to stay. Nothing escalates for the sake of a chorus.

The practical side matched the aesthetic one. He wrote and produced the track in his own home studio, and the whole thing came together inside about three weeks. An album followed, and this single was the track that introduced it.

What Matt Warren Left Out Of The Arrangement

The instrument list is short enough to say out loud. Speaking to Punk Head about making the track, Warren set out the thinking directly:

“The single was meant to be very minimal and as such features 2 guitars, a kick drum, a tambourine, and vocals. I wanted this particular track to be very organic and simple.”

Two guitars carry the harmony and the movement. The kick drum keeps time with no kit behind it, which leaves the space a snare would otherwise fill. The tambourine does the job a hi-hat usually does. Nothing is doubled for weight.

The vocal is what changes the character. Warren sang it in a lower register than usual, quietly and very close to the microphone, and he has said it was a way of working he had not tried before. Close singing at low volume keeps the breath and the consonants that a louder take buries, so the song pulls a listener nearer instead of pushing outward. Elliott Smith built a catalogue on that same principle.

Reviewers heard the same shape. Music Arena GH described sparse guitars, a kick drum beating like an anxious heart and the rhythmic whisper of a tambourine, which is close to a plain inventory of what is actually there. Mesmerized placed it as a song that flows rather than pushes, and noted that his run of work began in the lockdown period.

MusicRoots.News curator team: “What makes this one worth returning to is that the arrangement never argues with the singer. The parts that were left out are as deliberate as the parts that stayed, and that is a decision most writers only make later in a career.”

So the audience is reasonably specific. It suits listeners who want acoustic writing with alt-country phrasing and a pop sense of shape, and who do not need a chorus to arrive on schedule.

Where To Hear It All Made Sense And Follow The Artist

The single is on Spotify, and the catalogue sits on Apple Music. There is a Bandcamp page for the track as well, and earlier recordings are on SoundCloud.

He posts on Instagram and keeps video on his YouTube channel. His official site collects the rest.
