A Christian Americana Songwriter Sets a Second-Chance Song with Organ, Piano and Two Guitars

I’m Not My Yesterday rests on a single sentence. Howard Gripp wrote the song around its title and the line that answers it: grace has washed my past away. Then he handed that one idea to a full band. Out since 11 September 2026, the single sets a song about second chances in Americana and heartland rock.

Howard Gripp’s I’m Not My Yesterday sits in the playlist below with our Americana, roots rock and country rock picks. Howard Gripp’s artist profile gathers the rest of his coverage. The single reached MusicRoots.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Listen to it first, then keep reading for how the band was built around one line.

Howard Gripp Wrote I’m Not My Yesterday as a Declaration, a Title That Refuses to Be a Label

Most songs about regret look back at the damage. This one is written as a refusal instead. The title is in the first person and the present tense. It is also a negative, so the song argues with the past rather than describing it. That choice gives the writing its shape: everything after the first line has to earn the right to say it.

In Gripp’s own account, the song is about realising that our past does not have to define who we are today. That covers what we have done, the mistakes we have made and the places we have been. In his notes on the song, the past is part of the story but not the end of it. He calls the words deeply personal. So he released an official lyric video, letting listeners follow them line by line. Under the music video, he also asks listeners to share their own stories of change.

The answering line is where the song turns. The refusal in the title needs a reason, and grace has washed my past away supplies it. That is how faith enters the record without a sermon. Gripp files the music under Americana, heartland rock and faith-based songs about real life. This single sits squarely in all three.

He wrote the music and the words with Billy Smiley, who also arranged the song with him and produced it. Smiley then mixed and mastered the track with Billy Whittington.

MusicRoots.News Curator Team: “We placed I’m Not My Yesterday in our playlist because it shows how far one plain sentence can carry a song. The band never crowds the line; it builds a room around it.”

The Band on I’m Not My Yesterday by Howard Gripp, From Acoustic Guitar to Organ and Piano

The arrangement is built from the singer outwards. Gripp sings the lead and plays acoustic guitar, and Mike Payne and Smiley add electric and acoustic guitars around him. Chris Brown plays bass, while Miles McPherson covers drums and percussion. Jonathan Brown plays organ and piano, and Smiley and Ron Hemby sing the backing parts.

That keyboard pair is the detail to listen for. Organ and piano have long been the keyboard pair of church music. Here, they carry a testimony song into a heartland rock setting. Every part on the credits belongs to a named player.

Heartland Rock, From John Mellencamp and Bob Seger to The NRT Gathering

Heartland rock grew up on that idea. John Mellencamp built his brand of it on traditional instrumentation. Meanwhile, Bob Seger made his name with songs about ordinary working lives. Gripp borrows that plain band sound and points it at a different subject, the possibility of starting again.

The song runs four minutes and 16 seconds, unhurried for a single. Four days after release, Gripp shared a live performance of it from The NRT Gathering. Then, in October, he followed it with another single, When I Was A Kid, which features Benjy Gaither.

The song now names a larger release. Apple Music lists a six-track Not My Yesterday EP for 4 December 2026. It gathers this single and When I Was A Kid with three songs not yet out: Landslide, Unshaken and I Can’t Breathe. Earlier, his 2024 debut EP, Rescued Redeemed Forgiven, won Best Christian Album of the Year at the 2025 Rampage Music Awards, according to his site.

If you like Americana with a story of change at its centre, start with the lyric video. Then hear the band version from the first line to the last.

Stream the single on Spotify or Apple Music. Follow Howard Gripp across platforms: Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Linktree, and the official site.
